I am seeking info regarding a Marriage which took place at Keele in Staffordshire in April 1837.The first question I must ask is;Am I right in thinking that registration with the GRO etc, only started after a certain date in 1837? Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham.

Yes started 1st July 1837 so the qtr is Sept .ie 1st July to 30th Sept. You will need to look in parish records for the marriage you want. Shirley

William I have an interest in Thomas Greens who married in Stafford! If you track this marriage down and it gives his father's name, I would be most obliged if you would let me know - I have several Thomas Greens who seem to have drifted off to Staffordshire. OC

Many thanks Kelly, and it is indeed the correct Marriage, and it is a pity that it doesn't come within the 1837 etc,as I am wishing to know the Father of Jane 'Durbar'.As far as this Thomas Green is concerned 'Old Crone',he was born in Burslem in c 1815,but unfortunately perhaps,it is the Durber family I am related to. I too have an April 1837 marriage on my tree and I'm deperate to find the groom's father's name. Frustrating isn't it? On another branch, a widow remarried and we were able to track her father, by the second marriage, her first being before 1837. Any chance your Jane married again later? Gwyn

I believe 'cefn' is Welsh for 'ridge'

I think Mawr may be 'great' or 'big'

Cefn Mawr roughly translates as Big Back, and whilst I would agree that one has to be careful giving open details of oneself, nethertheless one has to be proud of where you come from! Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham
