Thanks Ozibird I don't think that's my William. I have found him in every census up to 1891 and his death in 1899 so I am sure he was born 1810 as the age is always consistent ( although I have to admit I haven't got a copy of his death cert yet - but not sure what information that will give me ). Also there seems to be loads of Nutts in South Molton. There is another William born about the same year who was a bootmaker married to Mary they appear to have no children and lived almost all their lives in South Molton. re James being a cousin - quite possible - I think you're telling me I could take myself down the wrong track. I take your point, thank you. |

Hi Ozibird (luv the name) You're probably right but I thought it worth a try. I'm not sure about this visiting record offices and stuff and I don't know how else to find out who William's parents are as it's pre 1837. And Devon is a long way from where I live so I thought I'd try this route. |

Hi Helen Thank you for responding Sorry if I confused with Bristol but its Bristol on my 1841 census print off. I'm pretty certain this is my William as i have found his wife and family, close by in 1841 census - HO 107 /376/2 Grace age 25, William age 4 and Elizabeth age 1 month. It says yes against born in county for all 3 but in fact only Elizbeth was born in Bristol - Grace was born Launceston Cornwall, William Sth Molton. Later census show them all in this same area so I am sure they are mine. Why William wasn't at home I have no idea - maybe he was escaping a screaming baby! Oh yes my William was a Woolcoomber on his son, John's birth cert in 1845 so that ties in. Does this help? |

1841 also doesn't say James wasn't born in Bristol, it says he wasn't born in Gloucestershire. |

Just because he was born in Devon doesn't mean his family didn't move? |

In 1841 my relie, William Nutt (born 1810 South Molton Devon), wasn't at home, he was at the home of : James Nutt age 30 Accountant Not born in Bristol Jane Nutt (wife) age 30 born Bristol Henry age 10 born Bristol Jane age 8 James age 5 Frederick age 4mths all born Bristol In my search to find William's parents and siblings I thought I would trace James and family to see if he was related to William - a vauge hope parents or siblings might be at his home in a later census - but he disappears! I have searched for James, Jane and Henry. I found a couple of possible Henry's in 1851 but one's a visitor and the other a lodger. I found a Jane, birthplace unknown, in 1861 in a lunatic asylum but that's it. 1841 census HO 107/373/2 I know how helpful you can be on this site so can anyone help please? Suggestions etc. |
