Help with burial 1943, Greater London

My gt grandmother died in March 1943, registration Greenwich. Family rumour says she was buried at Grove Park. Mum phoned Lewisham Council but the search costs £20.00 (gasp!). Any other ideas how I might find out where she was buried? No other known relatives at Grove Park or any special family plots that I know of. Thanks, Selena

If you have time and are not far away, you can go to the archives and search for yourself for free. If you have the Death Registration date or quarter and year it is not difficult. I have done it in Hammersmith without problems. Regards Sylvia.

Thanks Sylia, I do have the date and death registration (not the cert though). I didn't know that you could search the crematorium archives for yourself. I can't get on to Lewisham's website at present but I will phone them next week. Thanks again Selena

Selena, just a thought, is Grove Park owned by the Council? If it is they will have records. However if it is privately owned the owners will make you pay!! Sylvia.

Thanks 90% certain its council. My elderly aunt said there was a memorial/funeral card but it was lost during house moves. Typical! Selena

Hi Selena, Would there have been a write-up in the local newspaper? Did she go to church? There would be something in the church magazine. Have you phoned Lewisham Archives to see if they can suggest what to do? I had a similar experience a couple of days ago at Elmers End. They wanted £10 to open a book (I knew the date) No chance!! Last time I went to Hither Green cemetery they were very helpful, and today at Camberwell New the lady in the office went out of her way to give me information. Good luck, Janice

Thanks Janice. Interesting that you mentioned the church as she lived in St Alphege's Passage, Greenwich (behind the church). I'm a bit flumoxed as to why she is supposedly in Grove Park. Most of our relations were in Brockley or Hither Green. Think I need to contact Lewisham again. Selena
