It will have to be Dublin, I think. If you google Dublin+GRO, the site tells you exactly how to go about it and the fee. Jay

Just like Scotland, civil registration in Ireland was separate from that of England and Wales. Registration of marriages, for example, began in approx. 1845 for Protestants and in 1864 for Catholics and everyone else. I don't believe that BMD records were destroyed in the 1922 Four Courts fire (which did claim a large number of documents), but the indexes are not available online, unfortunately. Janet North London Borders has a fabulous thread on how to search for Irish records - just type 'Irish Family History' in the Search box and it should come up. Hope this helps - Tim

I am no expert on Irish records, but I understood that Ireland kept its own records and that a large number of them were destroyed during a huge fire in Dublin during 'the troubles'. I would be very interested in any information that other members have on Irish records, as a number of my branches seem to be heading that way.

When my Mother was born, in Southern Ireland, in 1912, Ireland was part of Gt.Britain, so technically she was British. So why can't I find her birth. BMD's started in 1837 but only seem to be for England & Wales. Why wasn't Ireland included? Anyone have any ideas? M. Steer
