Hi, can someone tell me if deaths had to be registered around 1860-1870. Many thanks |

Well, all births, marriages and deaths were supposed to be registered from 1837, but there was no financial penalty for failure to do so until 1875 so some people didn't bother! |

Robyne If you have access to Ancestry and bring up the final pages of deaths on each quarter you will usually find a long list of 'unknown' deaths of all ages. Presumably they were people who remained unidentified but there are an awful lot of them! They all belong to someone's tree and this may explain why some deaths can't be found in the registers. Hi Robyne From the front page click on England & Wales BMD Index, then click on the deaths tab in the top box of the three. This will bring up a name search box plus a list of years. Ignore the name box and click on the year required. This will bring up the four quarters, click on the relevant one. You will then get an alpha list and chose the last letter available (usually Y or Z). When the page is visible use the green arrow at the top of the screen to scroll to the last page. There are some quarters which do not seem to have these records so it may be worth checking the whole year. These unknowns also appear in the Births in exactly the same way, presumably because the surname was left off the paperwork sent to the ONS. Hope I have made this clear for you. Happy hunting!! Helen :-) |
