Gawd thats messy isnt it Well Head looks like a Boatman to me - but that doesnt seem to fit with the others??? Mary - dresser? Richard - Silk Throssler??? Wm - Cotton Dyer Thomas- Rope Maker Last one (cant remember name now) Cotton Doffer? (I thought it was dresser at first, but pretty sure its doffer). I think you need to look up the old occupations website for cotton workers. Still a bit worried about a Boatman in the midst of this!

Oh, I can help here! I have a rellie on the 1881 census who is a Throstle Doffers Bottom Knocker. This was a job in the weaving sheds and it consisted of banging the bottoms of the throstle doffers (a thingy, from which thread emerged) to rid them of fluff and stuff. It was actually far more involved than it first sounds, cos the operative had to run UNDER the weaving machine whilst it was going hell for leather, and bang the wooly bottoms - must have called for great skill and dexterity! A Silk Throstler was someone responsible for winding the silk thread onto the Throstles ( a big bobbin to you and me) in such a manner that it ran out smoothly when being woven. I have noticed that the Cotton and Woolen Trades have very specific jobs and the operatives were very proud of their particular skills. OC
