Great, thanks a lot for all your help. Agreed, it looks like Tamar; that wasn't a name that I've come across yet. Wow - that's a big help. I've not had a lot of luck with the IGI yet, but that's great! Thanks a lot for that Kate. Owen

Anyway, this looks like the right family, on www.FamilySearch.org: International Genealogical Index - British Isles 77. CHARLES JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Christening: 14 NOV 1830 Boxford Meeting-Independent, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England 78. JOSHUA JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Christening: 08 OCT 1826 Boxford Meeting-Independent, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England 79. EPHRAIM JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Christening: 09 SEP 1832 Boxford Meeting-Independent, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England 80. HANNAH JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Female Christening: 09 NOV 1828 Boxford Meeting-Independent, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England 81. THOMAS JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Christening: 26 FEB 1837 Boxford Meeting-Independent, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England 82. EPHRAIM JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Christening: 09 SEP 1832 Boxford, Suffolk, England 83. JOSHUA JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Christening: 09 JUL 1826 Boxford, Suffolk, England 84. LOUISA JACOBS - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Female Christening: 15 JUN 1834 Boxford Meeting-Independent, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England So, it looks as if her name was Tamar, and she was Charles's mother. There is also this marriage on FamilySearch: IGI Individual Record FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0 British Isles Search Results | Download | Pedigree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WILLIAM JACOBS Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: THAMAR BEARDWELL Family Marriage: 10 APR 1821 Boxford, Suffolk, England -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the marriage date. Kate.

Bearing in mind that we don't know for sure if Tamar was the mother of all the children without seeing their baptism entries and / or William and Tamar's marriage entry, there should be a birth registration for the youngest child, Walter (age 11 on the 1851 census page after Charles), which would give you his mother's name and maiden name. Kate.

I think it probably says 'Tamer' or 'Tamar' (Tamar is certainly a girl's name, perhaps Tamer is a variant spelling or mis-spelling of it?) Don't forget that the census does not say that she is Charles's mother, as she could be his step-mother. Also, her name on the census might be a nickname. So you would be best to look for Charles's baptism in the parish records to see what it says for his mother's name there. Kate.

Definitely looks like a T at the start to me if you compare it with the James further up the page and the T in Thomas just above it.

I have traced an ancestor to the 1851 census. Charles JACOBS, born c.1835 in Assington, Suffolk. His father was William, born c. 1796. According to Ancestry, his mother was called James!!!!!! To me, the name looks like Ta???er. I'd be greatful if anyone has any suggestions...Ta
