I think that the name is too common to be other than coincidence, but it would be worth chasing the man back, to see if the occupation runs in the family. He might be named after 'uncle Charles who went to America'

Can you find the Cumbrian Charles on the 1871 census and then trace him backwards. This might confirm if he isn't your man. Merry

Hi I have a Charles Ferguson an architect who moved to USA. details are:- born c1808 England...don't know where..LDS site down at moment 1850 US census Charles aged 42 living in Lafayette Louisiana with wife Elizabeth, same age and 7 children. He's dead by 1860 census..well it has Elizabeth as a widow. I've looked on Ancestry and I think he'd already moved to US by this time. The oldest child Emily Elizabeth Ferguson it says on 1850 she was born in England, but subsequent census says US. Google & A2A turned up a Charles Ferguson architect in Cumbria in 1870's..now this could be my man, elderly who left his wife or someone completely different. Any suggestions? regards Cynthia
