In 1891 there was a Frederick Underwood listed as wife's son on the census....presumably a child Alice had whilst she was still single, or in a previous marriage. Merry

Christine I think I misread your thread. Are you hoping to find mother's maiden name in the birth register INDEX? Mother's maiden names weren't included in the index until 1911. You would need to a) buy the birth cert or b) look for the parents with Harriet on census and then try to find the marriage and/or c) look for any women with first name and birthplace/age that correspond to the mother on census with Harriet. nell

Initially I just remembered she was from Ashley, because we looked for her before. After I'd posted all the above I looked for your previous thread, on which you said mum's name was Underwood!! Merry

Am i being stupid or not...i'm trying to find out my great great grandma's maidens name...my great grandma name is harriet parton which i have looked at her birth register and its not there and also sent for her birth certificate with no joy.Is there any other way of finding out?? Soory folks if that doesn't make sense.lol
