The bride wasn't pregnant, but my uncle flatly refused to marry in a RC church - she had to choose, him or religion! He was not a churchgoer, but just had very strong views (his Mum was Irish catholic) Perhaps your bridegroom was the same? Jay

more likely that she didn't want the word of pregnancy/ date of wedding getting back to family. My grandmother lied about the year of her wedding til the day she died (Not knowing I'd already worked it out) also catholic weddings were not recognised unless there was a registrar present so it was less fuss in a CofE AND if she married a non catholic then she couldn't marry in a catholic church at that time.

She may not have wanted a lecture from the priest about her 'sin'. Even when I married in 1957 to a Catholic, THEY were still very judgmental and parishioners were very wary of their wrath!!

Very unlikely that a Catholic Priest would REFUSE to marry a pregnant woman - unless the father of the child was not a Catholic. OC

If a catholic girl was 6 months pregnant at marriage in 1905, could her local priest have refused to marry her? Could this be why she married in C of E? Thanks Simone x
