On the 1901 census, in the final column where it gives the choices of 'deaf and dumb, blind, lunatic, imbecile or feeble minded' it says Myrthem. (Son-in-law of Rachel Goudge, 1826 Born St Austell, living St Austell) I have googled; checked Cyndi's list and others, and still have not the slightest idea what this would mean. If it isn't a 'proper' medical word perhaps someone more knowledgable will have an idea of what it was intended to be! Victoria

Hi Reggie - just went in to have another look and think it is to do with his health - and wonder if it is supposed to be myrhythmia (not at all sure about that spelling either - but a heart problem). Does that sound reasonable? Victoria

I wish I knew.............although it is certainly plausible. I doubt whether either the chap himself , or the enumerator, could spell the name of the condition, and just logged a reasonable approximation........ Perhaps when you get round to his death, the cert will answer the puzzle........... Reg

Whatever it means, it doesnt seem to prevent him from working as he has an occupation as a labourer. Not convinced its health related myself either
