Thanks Christina - of course that makes more sense. I'll try and find anything that might link the male children. Perhaps they might have the Jepson middle name, although if my Tom is one of theirs, he would be the eldest and might be the only one with the Jepson middle name. First I need to find the marriage of Jospeh & Maria. Thanks, Jeanne

Just to help clarify - if the newspaper cutting says 'relict' then it is Maria whose death is being reported and she was already a widow. Christina

I have a Maria Gritton death in Epsom Q1 1867 aged 80 !! I can't find the death for Joseph Thomas Gritton on 10 March 1867 though. Hang on - maybe this newspaper got the death round the wrong way, and it was Maria that died and not J T Gritton in 1867. My Tom Jep has his birth as either Liverpool or Congleton depending on which census you look at...... I could get the death certs for all of them but it doesn't confirm that these are Tom Jep's family for sure. At this rate, I'll be asking him in person.............if you know what I mean !!! LOL, Jeanne It's a verty slow day at the office - all the ships are on their way to the M/East !!

I've just looked at the 1861 census at Jospeh Thomas (for not the first time) and keep discounting him because.........if he's the one, then it seems our family made a spectacular fall in society. He has a brother John Gritton, a wealthy property owner and Clerk to the Bank of England (1851 @ 44 Westmoreland Place, City Road, London) who's son, John W Gritton ends up a Professor of Music in Reigate....................................we all end up in the slums of the East End !!! BTW - I have just got Joseph and John's will's.....they had a few quid, if you know what I mean. My Tom Jep marries the daughter of a Ship's Captain and her family seem pretty 'well to do' as well owning houses in Commercial Road, Stepney. If I can find a marriage entry for Jospeh Thomas Gritton, marrying a Maria Jepson - then I can't deny there must be a link to my Tom Jep. And it's probably just as well he is now dead because the family would kill him all over again for 'flogging the family silver' You've got to laugh........................... Jeanne

I have been looking for the birth of my 3xGGrandad for yonks, and I have asked advice from everyone about him. Bored at work this morning, I started to look again. I just Googled Jepson Gritton and got a link to the Newspaper Detectives. Maria Jepson 'relict' of J T Gritton died 10 March 1867 aged 81. Looks like the location is Surrey. My GGrandad was Tom Jepson Gritton married 1853 with Joseph Thomas Gritton 'Gentleman' as his dad. Tom and his wife went on to have a daughter Maria. Please go look, do you really think I have finally found a lead ??? It doesn't give me Tom Jep's birth evidence, but I might be able to get his mum and dad's death certs.... Rgds, Jeanne
