Hi all, I have found the marriage of my gr gr gr grandad Thomas Pownall to Sarah Oxley on the family search web site. The dates are 22 May 1831 in Leigh Lancashire but there is no church name. My question is how do I find which church, and when I have the church how do I go about getting a transcript? Thank you Cheryl

The absence of a specific church name suggests that there was only one Parish Church at the time - C of E. I think this link has the explanation you need: - if a little ambiguously! http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=41359&strquery=Leigh#s3 And this bit of Genuki (which was where I found the other link) has this: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/ChurchRecords.shtml Christine

Thanks Christine for the information. I'll take a look at those sites now. Best wishes Cheryl

Hi Jim, I don't think Emma or Joseph are any connection. Once I can find a transcript of Thomas and Sarah hopfully there might be some information on who were his parents. Thank you for trying anyway Cheryl

I'm not sure what the English practice was at that time, but I have several Scottish marriages conducted by the minister at his manse (i.e. vicarage). I'm also not sure how nonconformist marriages were recorded in the 1830s, but Leigh would be starting to become industrialised by 1831 so there might be some Methodist, Baptist etc. chapels starting to spring up. I had a quick look on Pallots Marriage Index but couldn't find this one.

Cheryl It is definitely 'The Parish Church' of Leigh. To get a copy of the marriage, the records are held by Lancashire Records Office - you can email them with a request (they are usually VERY slow to respond) or you could put a request on the message board. That way it will only cost you the price of a photocopy (and the goodwill of the member!) OC
