Don't forget this page if you have pre-1837 Middx weddings to trace: http://www.angelfire.*com/fl/Sumter/Middlesex.html (remove *) They're mainly NW of Middx, so not Shoreditch. There certainly are some Shoreditch events on the IGI - you can use the Hugh Wallis pages to narrow your search. Christine

Assuming that he got married after the start of Civil Registration in 1837, you should be able to get his marriage certificate, and that will give you his father's name and occupation. Oh, probably best to get the birth certificate of one of Joseph and Elizabeth's children first, to get Elizabeth's maiden name, if you don't already have it, to be sure of finding the right marriage. Kate.

Angela and Merry, I have him living in Birmingham in 1851. His wife was named Elizabeth. This may well be the family in Shoreditch. thanks to all for helping, Gail

Have just had a quick look. Was he married to Sarah Jane? In that case he says that he was born in Shoreditch.

If that's him born in Shoredirth in 1851 (a woodcutter) then this may be him in 1841 with older people who may be his parents: Elizabeth Ballard abt 1829 Middlesex, England St Leonard Shoreditch Middlesex Joseph Ballard abt 1786 Middlesex, England St Leonard Shoreditch Middlesex Joseph Ballard abt 1821 Middlesex, England St Leonard Shoreditch Middlesex Margaret Ballard abt 1791 Middlesex, England St Leonard Shoreditch Middlesex William Ballard abt 1831 Middlesex, England St Leonard Shoreditch Middlesex Merry

Have you found him on the 1851 census? That should tell you where he was born and might help to narrow the search.

Some of the baptisms/christenings etc will be on the IGI,but to check the original records you would probably have to use the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA). They don't keep records online, but have a website which shows what parish records they keep. Glen

I'm looking for my ancestor Joseph Ballard born approx. 1818 in Middlesex. How do I find his baptism/christening? Any suggestions please? Thanks Gail
