Anyone can change their name, provided there is no intent to defraud. You don't need any legal formalities. As the surname is the same, there's definitely a connection. But Agamemnon is less tricky to say than Panagakis. If you found it caused problems, you'd surely change both names. Anyway, Agamemnon was a Greek hero, not a 'wierd name'.

One of my rellies was born Agamemnon Panagakis, [he was a Greek]. He married Ellen Shields in September 1903 in the Kirkdale district of Liverpool, Lancashire. But on the marriage certificate of Ellen's sister, Mary Jane Shields there is a witness called Ronald Panagakis and I can't trace him anywhere. I think they are the same person but how can I find out? Is there a register of people who have changed their Christian names, or do you think he has just done this off his own bat because his own Greek name was too much of a mouthful for the Scousers? Any ideas anyone?
