Twice on the same census??

When I had this happen with the brother of my g-grandfather and his family......I checked the two addresses on a map and found the two streets backed on to each other...........so, I wondered if the enumerator handed one census sheet in at the front door and another one round the back?? The funny thing was that the two forms must have been filled in by different family members as they didn't match exactly.....one had all the children born in the same place and the other was more detailed with suburb info for the children.....I think this sheet was filled in my the wife and the over-simplified one by the husband!! lol Merry

Thanks for your replies, Kate, that's what seems to have happened but he obviously didn't realise (or they didn't) and both entries are still there Sarah :-)

I have come across whole families listed twice before, at the same address, but in the cases I have seen one entry will have a line drawn through it to cross it out and it will say, 'Moved to...' or 'Changed to...' or something like that, meaning that the enumerator included it by mistake in the wrong sub-district, village, township, or whatever, and then copied it out into the right one and crossed out the first entry. Kate.

Yes I've found this on a female relation. she was a monthly nurse and her employer has added her to his household as well as her family putting her on their records, would guess she was looking after the new Mum at their home but her family felt she was only away for a short while so she was added again. a misunderstanding as to the rules when filling in the census form i would think

Yes I agree Sarah, they are transcription errors. It does look like they are the same family, strange! Sorry I couldn't help further. Maybe one of the 'experts' on here can help to explain..lol good luck, Sue

I have a family who appear to have been recorded twice in 1881. Everything is identical, even the house number, but one is in Denmark Street and the other is Copenhagen Street. Derek.

Thanks for taking the time to look Sue, If you look on the images the differences are just transcription errors - everything is the same Sarah :-)

looking at the images, the address seems to be the same. Maybe the enumerator (sry spelling) forgot he'd already recorded the street and went back and did it again? Wonder if any of the other names on the page are repeated? Sue

I was looking for a rellie (well, his son's daughter married a ggg's brother!) who is supposedly from the original Priates of Penzance. Thing is, I think he's on the 1841 twice: HO107/154/3 folio 34 p 20 HO107/154/5 folio 21 p 34 Same street in Falmouth Same people, same ages & same occupation but written on a different page so not just entered on ancestry incorrectly. Is this likely or is it just an incredible coincidence (William, Elizabeth, Mary....) Sarah :-)
