You can search 1861 and 1891 by address on the 1837online site Reg

Hi again I did look at the 1891,but the districts have changed slightly,no longer a St Paul listed,the problem being that the London districts grew significantly for the last two census returns. It is a bit of a mind numbing thing to do with big districts,and if you look at the description of the districts you will sometimes find that the one side of a street is in one district and the other side is in a different one. Glad to see the naval connections are giving you something to do anyway,saves all that sunburn and suffering!! Glen

Thanks Glen I'll follow your directions. I don't mind spending the time, I just thought if there was an easier way..... BTW I've found more seamen connected to my family on the National Archives site and am becomming a bit obsessed. I looked in our archives at work and found we have loads of information on RN ships going back yonks !! No crew info of course but fascinating background material. Rgds, Jeanne

The 1881 shows it to be under St George in the East,and the district comes under St Paul. When you view an image there is a line of blue text above it; 'you are here;search,census,uk,census............' At the extreme right of this line is a district number,in the 1881 it is district 17. If you select a census year and district 17 you can then trawl through the district,image by image,but 1881 has 51 images for the whole district. If you select St Paul from the list you can then check which streets come under which district,but again this is a big parish with hundreds of streets. Glen

Hello Pat Both my mum and dad's ancestors seem to have 'congregated' in this street. In fact I lived there myself as a small child. So I really want to look at this street throughout the published census. I though Ancestry would have this facility but as Geln has told me it only works in 1881. Hi Glen That probably explains why when I look up on the 1881 census on Ancestry, and then use the back key it takes me to the address and not back to the person. I am looking for Anthony Street in Stepney. Thanks, Jeanne

Yes and No. The 1881 is searchable by address,the rest it takes a bit of trawling. Each parish is divided into districts and you can view which district a street belongs to,then trawl through the images for that district till you find the street. Where and when are you looking for? Glen
