In Scotland the name is sometimes spelt Mc(or Mac) Diarmid/Dairmid. I am currently looking for the death of one Christina Wood with the maiden name Mcdairmid, sometimes it's written McDermond. Looks like I have the oldest woman in Britain - she must be about 180 now!! If I find her let's hope she still has all her faculties |

Thanks for all help folks. I've now gone through every McD in the indexes over a 10 years period without finding a likely suspect, I may have to face up to the fact the birth wasn't registered. I'll continue to plough through the 1871 indexes trying to locate father, John. This is the first marriage certificate I've had out of over 30 that hasn't given me a lead on an address, instead just saying 'of this parish', so I suppose I haven't done too bad. I've now managed to obtain their daughter's birth certificate which gives Catherine's name as 'formerly Macdonald' so that's widened the scope even further :o) |

Not wanting to confuse you further, but I knew someone called McDermaid who pronounced the name McDermit |

If you're searching on FreeBMD - or the copy of it on Ancestry - then you need to remember that there are still gaps in the transcriptions. The full GRO index images are (mostly - it's still under test, I think) on Ancestry, indexed by first and last name on the page. You can trawl through those. If that doesn't work, www.ukbmd.org.uk has the list of Local ROs which have BMD transcription sites. Some records didn't make the leap from Local to GRO listings. Otherwise, there's also the hazard that there are (even quite modern) mistranscriptions in the official indexes/records (my maiden name, for instance, in the marriage list has ''OU'' where it should have ''EN''!). ..... and then I looked for Robert Snowdons!! Not one in NonT - but some born there and living elsewhere. Dozens of them in Durham (Gateshead is well provided for!) and Northampton. I had thought that if I could pinpoint him, it would be possible to look for Catherine nearby - they had to meet somewhere and it could well have been due to where they were working. Sorry I wasn't more successful! Victoria |

Have given up on finding Catherine because she could be anywhere as a servant and so turned my attention to John. There are few John McDermott (and variations in NonT). Not sure if this is helpful - probably quite the reverse. I'll keep looking for another hour or so. OK, I have a marriage certificate for an ancestor named Catherine Ann McDermit who married Robert John Snowdon in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18th October 1871. Catherine's age on the certificate is 21 years. In subsequent census she gives her place of Birth as Newcastle upon Tyne but I've tried all sorts of combinations and can't track down a birth record in the indexes: McDermit Macdermit McDermid Macdermid McDermott Macdermott Nothing at all between 1848 & 1852 !!!!!!! The marriage took place after the 1871 census so I thought it would be easy to track the family down in the 1871 census as it was only a few months before the marriage. I know her father's name was John and he was a bricklayer and alive in Oct 1871 but I can't even track the family down in the 1871 census !!!! I must be missing a different spelling of this name. Any ideas! Ta |
