Can't Find Registration of Death

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this. My g/grandfathers brother Edward was born in 1868. I have found him listed in the 1871 census. He does not appear with the family in the 1881 census. I have found registration of his birth but cannot find registration of his death. I have searched all the records from 1871 to 1881 but nothing. Any suggestions would be most gratefully received. Thankyou. Sarah

Can you find him in 1891 or 1901? What was his surname and where was he born? Rose

Hi Sarah - by 1881 Edward would have been 13/14 and old enough to be out in the world. He could have been in service, in the navy - lots of places where he could be 'hiding'. Perhaps look for a marriage for him? although I guess if you don't know where he is, that wouldn't be easy unless the surname was uncommon. Victoria

Just a bit more info, He was called Edward Gant and he was born in Newington in Surrey, the parish of St Mary, Newington.

I would also try the 1891 and 1901 census incase he was just missed from the 1881. As well as the other suggestions, he could have been in jail or in hospital or in an asylum and listed with just his initials. Merry

Thanks guys for all of your help. It certainly looks like that may be him. Do you suppose that the Navy spelt his name wrong and that is why he is listed as Grant? It just seemed a bit strange that his older brothers were still living at home, that's what made me think he was dead. Anyway thanks again Sarah
