Perhaps linked to Beadle (sort of overseer in a workhouse) or as my dictionary puts it 'an official in certain British institutions'. |

Oh yes, I stupidly didn't look at the next page, where it's much clearer. It looks like 'Cave's Charity House, beadhouse or hospital'. |

I'd never come across a beadsman before, but we seem to have one in the family. Here's the definition, from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beadsman My 3xG-grandfather William Parkinson, born c1771 in Quorndon or Quarndon, Leicestershire, is shown on the 1851 census as a beadsman, late farmer and maltster. He was in some kind of Charity Home. Can anyone read the name of the home on the census image? (There's also something written about it above schedule no. 112). |
