Can someone help me with information on the best way to access Parish Records from here in Australia. I am seeking an 1823 birth that is not shown in the IGI site. I know one of you experts out there will be able to tell me what to do.

There are a few Gloucester records on the BI VRI (British Isles Vital Records Index). Give me the name and I´ll see if there is anything.

His name was James Layton (Leighton), father was Thomas, and he was born in Pauntley/Pool Hill in 1823. Can you tell me more about that index pls?

Sorry - worth a try - but nothing there BIVRI is a set of 16 discs produced by Church of Latter Day Saints - similar to IGI. Coverage varies between counties - coverage can be seen on the following website http://www.genoot(.)com/downloads/BVRI2/ cost about 20 pounds sterling.

I could not find the baptismal record but I did find a trade directory for Poothill in 1876 naming Thomas Leighton as a carrier going to Gloucester every Saturday and Thomas Leighton junior as a shopkeeper. Incidently they claim that Dick Whittington came from Poothill. I think if you E.mail Gloucester record office they might be able to help. I found this James in Paultney in 1851 but he gives his birth place as Newent. LEIGHTON James 42 Stone Mason Newent Ann 37 Sandhurst William 8 Pauntley Frederick 6 Pauntley David 4 Pauntley John 2 Pauntley www forest of Dean net looks interesting.

You could try going to the nearest LDS family history centre and ordering the microfilms of the parish registers you're interested in. There's a list of centres here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp and you can look at their catalogue to see if they have the registers you want: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp I assume there's more on the LDS microfilms than there is on the IGI site, but perhaps somebody can confirm? This site has some parish register transcriptions: http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ It's pay-per-view, but if you find something you're interested in, it only costs a few pence to view it. Finally, there's a thread on the Tips Board which has the URLs of a lot of parish registers you can find online. I've bumped it up to the top of the front page for you.

Poolhill is very close to Newent. Pity they have closed the local studies centre at the central library , I would have gone and looked it up for you. Unfortunately I go into town by bus and the record office is quite a wallk from the centre. I believe they are very helpful if you e mail them though. Ann Glos
