When ordering certificates from the GRO online, there is a place to put in checking points (i.e. parent's names). If the certificate turns out to be the right one, it doesn't cost any more to do this. However, if the checking points do not match what is on the certificate, they charge £3 for the search they've done and refund you £4. Kath. x |

Cherie, the info supplied to the registrar is given by the informant. They may have got his birthdate wrong. (Specially if it was a man. LOL!!!) Don't discount it just because of the birthdate if other things seem to be right. Anne |

Hi, if you have the cert with the DOB it should also have where he was born, and this may help you to narrow down the search, however if the date is wrong this could also be wrong. Another point, the day and month may be correct, just the year that is wrong. Next, do you know what his birth date should be - this will narrow down which quarter to go on. and finally... although it was law to register a birth I have a g g uncle who was never registered in 1895 - his eight brothers and sisters all where, but the family tale is that the Father went drinking to celebrate on the way to register, got drunk and forgot to register the birth! hope some of this helps. My grandfather's death cert has the wrong year on his birthdate AND his birthplace is mispelt. |
