My elusive rellie is William Benham c1796 Rendlesham, Suffolk FOR REF: His wife & kids are on 1841 in Islington. (Elizabeth 1801, Mary 1832, Betsey 1835, William 1837 & George 1840) HO107/664/8 folio 6 p7 He's on 1851 with them in Islington as an 'Officer GPO' (a postman to you & I !) HO107/1502 folio 362 p24 and on the 1861 with a new wife, same address as the 1851, but still a postman. RG9/142 folio 85 p12 So it bugs me that I can't find him on the 41 ! Can anyone try to find him please? - the trouble with this census is that it will just say 'out of county' probably. Is there a way of searching with occupation?? Sarah :-) PS the first marriage to Elizabeth was in 1828 at St James, Westminster

He was in the pub and the landlord was too p****d to fill in the census form (or your rellie was too p****d to tell anyone his details!) Merry

You know, I hadn't even thought of that one - the obvious pub I'd already worked out a little 'fancy woman' scenario, having thought first 'maybe he worked nights at the sorting office' and decided that would just be too boring... Sarah :-)

There is a William Brenham at St.Leonard Foster Lane Post Office listed as born 1801 not sure its him of course but might be worth a look. Does not say he was born Suffolk but the post office may not have known that. Irene

Have you tried looking for Bonham? Some 'e's look like 'o's at that time, could have been mistranscribed.

Thanks Roger, Tried that - the problem is that he'd be born out of county for where I think he is (Islington) AND not with his family (I've got them) so my only chance is to identify him through year of birth + or - 5 years and occupation - probably a postman. I think I'll just have to admit defeat.... Sarah :-)

He is the 2nd one down on the 1841 census list of William Benhams when I put in William Benham birth 1801 Middlesex England area St.Leonard Foster Address St.Leonard Foster Lane Middlesex. Easy to find. Good luck Irene

Thanks Irene & Jim, I've finally found him (don't know what took me so long!) Although he's been ticked as 'born in county' I think I'll claim him as mine. I'll just check on a map if by living in Shepperton Street, Islington it would be likely that he worked in St Leonards. Thanks for your help! Sarah :-)
