Hi Elaine, i have a grt grt grandfather who is listed at home with his parents and siblings, but at the same time living a few streets away with a married women who later became his wife and the mother of my grt grandfather. Also her husband is living alone a few streets away.Nothing changes does it ? Gill

Don't forget that the forms were, and still are, given out a few days before the actual census night, so lots of people filled, and fill, them in early with the names of the people who they expect to be there on census night. Then if somebody extra stayed over on the night, they might well remember to add their name to the list. But if somebody who they had already filled in was away for the night, they probably didn't remember to cross them out! Kate.

Eh up, another MJ. Just in case anyone was wondering, the above is not me. Haven't found any rellies who appeared twice on a census, although I'm aware that it sometimes happened - most of mine preferred not to be there at all.

I have a gt grandfather who is on a vessel in harbour in Great Yarmouth and at home with his wife at the same time! I also have a gt gt gt grandmother who is at home with her husband and children in 1851 but also with her children at her parents' house. Very useful as it confirmed her maiden name! But for all the family members I've found twice I have at least 2 others who are awol.

I have it with one of my ancestors in 1851 cenus who lived in Tring and is listed there as head of her household. However she is also listed that night as visiting her sister in law. That and some transcription errors in the index made for some confusion. I can only assume that the enumerator had asked who the head of the house was before asking who was actually there on the census night. It is worth remembering that there are mistakes in the census records and problems with transcribing the indexes. Additionally of course the images themselves are not the original records but were copied from the original records. There is room for all sorts of errors.

And this is my ggg grandmother in 1861 Frances Thornley abt 1815 Newbold, Leicestershire, England Head Swannington Leicestershire Frances Thornley abt 1816 Staunton Harold, Leicestershire, England Visitor Swannington Leicestershire She is recorded at home, and at a friend's house about half a mile away. PS also noticed the ages are out as well as she was probably born 18th Dec 1813....!

Phew thank you, this is actually great news because it could tie him to an affair with a child in Kent that there were only family rumours about ;0)

Think this is quite possible - the census form at the Barracks would have been filled in with those who were SUPPOSED to be there - doubt if anyone went round the barracks at midnight to check they were all there. Meanwhile, he got unexpected leave - or nipped off home for a few hours. OC

He was born in 1873 in Little Canfield in Essex - (Dunmow) On one census he is at home with his wife Elizabeth Antonia Ward in Hoddesdon, Herts showing his birth place as Canfield his occupation being mounted infantry On the other he shows up at Chatham Barracks in Kent as infantry soldier Could he be in 2 places at one or would the enumerator have taken the census from the barracks from a list and not actually see him personally?

You need to check carefully but it IS possible. I have a couple of relatives on same census twice - either at work, or visiting relatives, but still put down at their home. Dea x
