My great-granny in Australia committed bigamy (twice), but she was never caught. Funnily enough, she came from Lancashire. |

From Bath georgian newspapers Date Abstract Reference 4 Sep 1788 Deaths: Elizabeth, Dwgr Duchess of Kingston at her house in Calais last Thursday. She was convicted of bigamy on 22 Apr 1776. She has left the bulk of her fortune to Mr Meadows MP for Nottingham. |

Flippin' 'eck!! Number 13! My gran married a man in Preston, Lancs, who (unbeknown to her) was already married.......his name was Whelan too! Don't think they are related, though!! Merry |

Hi just found reference to the following cases - are they of interest to anyone? 1). 1869 - John MILLER - already married - married a Catherine HEALEY. John Miller had apparently already married his Aunt (which was illegal) - connecting name - LACE 2). 1882 - Edmund LEWIS c 1842 married Jane HALL a Liverpool barmaid - he already had a wife - Catherine Humphreys LEWIS of Cardiff. - case was tried in Birmingham. 3). Joseph NEWTON c 1839 married Esther WHITEHEAD IN 1861 4). Robert NIXON - an elderley gentleman in 1882 - found guilty of bigamy 5). George PRIESTLY c 1845 - sawyer of Everton - married Alice WEATHERILT in Sept. 1871 - He was already married to Rachel GRESTY - She - Rachel GRESTLY had in the meantime committed 3 bigamys marriages herself!!! 6). Elizabeth WHITEHEAD married James TOOTHILL in 1875 - In Bury, Lancs -her husband being still alive. 7). James Henry UNETT of Gorton married Mary Ann WILLIAMS in 1881 - he was already married to Mary Ann RANDLES. 8). James BERRY - Collier married Susan GUTTERIDGE in 1884 in Newton'le'Willows 9). Charles Henry Wilson c 1848 married Minne WILDE 10). Alice CROCKETT married to Jim CROCKETT in Shrewsbury married a man called BOURNON in 1890 1) William JACK married Ann PATON, (in Glasgow - 1904),then bigamously to Florence Priscilla CLARKE 1907 12). Dorothy Josephine WAGSTAFFE - a nurse - found guilty of bigamy 1907 13). Matilda WHELAN - first married 1902 - later married a man called BURNS - convicted 1913.
