Assizes were a system of courts that existed until fairly recently. Basically, small cases were heard before magistrates in the quarter-sessions (met 4 x a year). More serious cases were heard by a judge & jury at various assizes which again took place at specific times. For example, my gt gt grandmother's brother was tried for murder at the winter Oxford Assizes (the crime occured in Gloucestershire). More info about them, though you won't find specific details of individual cases unless you go to Kew, here: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=154&j=1 Don't worry about not knowing, I only found out through my research! |

He might be in the Black Sheep index (google to find it). If not, prison registers which have details of admissions, crimes, trials etc. would be in the county records office. His crime and trial would be reported in the local newspaper, so if you find out when and what he did, you can see if you can get a photocopy of any reports. If he was tried at the assizes, it would probably be reported in The Times. The Times archive is online, accessible through joining Befordshire Virtual library. nell |
