I have been having a moan with Lost Cousins this afternoon about putting 1881 rellies on their site. I explained that I didnt understand what they mean by 'Piece Number' which they keep asking for and it isnt marked on ancestry as such. It seems to mean folio number,so why dont they just say that! Apparently, on Ancestry it doesnt always mean folio, sometimes they tack the piece no. onto RG number. To cut a long story short, they have altered their FAQ info so everyone can be quite clear what they want you to put in. Hope you can all understand me.!! Regards Sylvia. |

Hi Sylvia The peice number is not the folio number. In 1881 always RGll/ then the peice number such as 2345 folio number is usually shown in large bold type at the top of the corner of the page. Page number is usually in smaller type. The peice number usually represents the area such as a village. Pauline |

Both Ancestry and LDS site give more or less the same info but set it out differently. Piece number is literally the piece of the census eg the parish of Heybridge (this is then split into Enumeration districts which Ancestry show but LDS doesn't) Folio is the double sided leaf of paper (cf foliage) finally the page number is given - obviously two pages for every folio. So Ancestry has: Source information: RG11/1777 (1777 is the piece number) ED 6 Folio 13 Page 22 whilst LDS has RG11 Piece/Folio 1777/13 Page number 22 |

The confusion arose because when Lost Cousins started they thought everyone would use Family search which does call it piece no. But then people started using Ancestry who call it something else. This is why they have now altered their FAQ and asked me to pass on the word. Sylvia. |
