Family mystery

Wonder if someone could help with a mystery. There are 6 sisters, all with the surname of Clarkson. One of the sisters gave birth to a daughter out of wedlock, but which one? The child was born in 1895 in Tadcaster, Yorkshire and was named Ellen - her surname was Wigglesworth-Clarkson, Wigglesworth being the father's surname. Any ideas please. Stella

If you order the birth cert that will have the mothers name on it.

Name: Ellen Wigglesworth Clarkson Year of Registration: 1895 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Tadcaster County: Yorkshire - West Riding Volume: 9c Page: 908 (click to see others on page) Hi, in the birth indexes, Wigglesworth is actually a middle name, not a double barrel surname but I think you are right to think that is the name of the father. In my tree I have a lady having an illigitimate child and the father is not named on the cert, although she has Newton as a middle name. I was able to find a baptism for her in Wakefield and it gave the name of the father - this is quite rare though but may be worth a shot if the cert doesn't have the fathers name on.

Thanks Tom, but was hoping I could find out on the LDS site, but cannot even find her birth on there - wondering if I've just missed it somehow and thought someone else could find it - they give parent's names on there I believe.

Hi Tom. It's definitely the father's name - evidently he was already married (shock, horror) !

This is the info from the Hugh Wallis site about what is on the IGI for Tadcaster, Tadcaster C071901 1813-1859 M071901 1813-1837 C071905 1716-1720 M071905 1716-1720 (Inghamite) C087471 -1763 1776-1835 (Wesleyan) C087461 1824-1837 I will be going to the WYAS (west yorkshire archive service) some point in the next couple of weeks - when I am feeling a bit better and would be able to have a look for you if you would like? (providing they have the relevant parish records)

OK, will do that - do you know what church the family used (I have no idea how big Tadcaster is). Do you have any marriage certs for any of her aunts/uncles that say which church they got married in?

Marie Report 13 Jul 2006 17:19

have you found her on the 1901 census??

East Point Report 13 Jul 2006 17:19

One of her Aunts (Lucy Clarkson) got married in St George's Church in Leeds - married Abraham Harrison. That is the only one I know of I'm afraid.

The only way to find the mothers name is to buy the certificate. The LDS site is great but even there you still have to check up on them. In many cases it is well worth the £7-00 to get the proper information. I have someone in my tree they were not married but she gave the fathers name as a middle name to some of her children. There is no easy way to get the mothers name could be she is on the 1901 census with the child stated as her daughter. Happy hunting. Eve
