Ooh, I've actually managed to figure out how to look at the overseas BMD's for free on Family Relatives at last! The website is www.familyrelatives.org I've had a look at Marine Births for 1897 and 1898 on there, but there is no sign of her. Sorry! Kate. |

Yes, it does say 'Atlantic Ocean' in the 'WHERE BORN' column followed by 'at sea BS', which means she was a British subject. Kate. |

Wait, is she Lily Owen age 3? I'm just loading the image for that one to see if it's any help. Kate. |

Rebecca, can you put up some details so that we can look at the image, please? Adoption wasn't 'illegal' before the 1920's, just not formalised. So there certainly were adopted children before then but they would not have documentation to show they were adopted. There is a register of births at sea which you can look at on 1837 online (in the 'overseas' section). Kate. |

I have a little girl who has appreared with one of my relatives on the 1901 Census and there are a couple of strange things about her bless her cotton socks. Firstly it says shes adopted which Ive never seen before on any of the census info and wasnt legal till the 1920s Secondly im sure it says that her place of birth was the Atlantic Ocean and then in the end coloumn for the disabilites its scribbled in lightly at sea and then something that looks like VO5 or more likely pos surely its wouldnt be on her birth certificate as place of birth 'out at sea'? |
