Is there a way of finding who was living at 24 Palmerston Street, Battersea at the time of the 1871 census? Peter

I would go to 1837 online, you can do an address search on the 1861 census, then use the name of the people at that address and or other people living in the street to search the 1871 census and once you have the street on the 1871 you can page forward and back to find the house you are looking for. another way that i have used before is to just put the place name and a common first name in the search box once you have got the correct census place go to View description of enumeration district and read through all of these untill you have the correct district then search through the pages untill you find the address, this is the hard way to search but sometimes it's the only way. Peter, Another way is to Ancestry and click on the 1871 cenus. Select Surrey and then choose Battersea or Battersea St Mary. You can view the description of the enumeration districts to see which roads are covered. You can also do an address search on 1881. Rose

Elixzabeth =would be appreciated if you could Background - I have a Birth cert for Agnes Beatrice Deacon b 30 9 1869 at 24 Palmerston Street to Alice Deacon formerly Elmes and Augustus Deacon (printer). Informant A Deacon 15(looks like) Palmerston TERRACE Battersea. I don't think Alice was actually married - cant find an Augustus Deacon that fits and she marries the next year as Alice elmes to Thomas Freeman - have them together with Agnes Beatrice in 1881 - looking for addressas I am clutching at straws. Hi Peter......there is something very ODD going on with your 1871 census problem!!! I found Palmerston Terrace by locating it on the address search in 1881 and then looking to see who was aged 10 and born in Battersea.....turned up one match....an Emily Tudor. Luckily she was living in the same street in 1871. That was the easy bit!! You implied that Alice Elmes married Thomas Freeman in 1870 (ie before the 1871 census....is that right? I couldn't see this marriage) The problem is this (if Alice was already Mrs Freeman)......in Palmerston Terrace in 1871 lives this household: Alice Deacon abt 1848 Brompton, Middlesex, England Head Battersea Surrey Agnes Elm abt 1844 Brompton, Middlesex, England Visitor Battersea Surrey Alice shows as married, but her husband is not at home. The ''coincidence'' of the visitor being called Elm (unmarried dressmaker, and named Agnes.....baby named for her???!!) is too much, surely? So, is it a coincidence, or not? They are at 10 Palmerston Terrace. This road only seems to go up to number 12. I can't find baby Agnes in 1871...... Merry

Thanks If I hadnt been asleep I could have joined in and helped(especially as I can't tell my William/Thomas apart---sorry for the red herring. Still hasn't answered the question of who was at 24 Palmerston STREET which is given as the place of birth - I was hoping to get a clue from that. Help is much appreciated - will PM Elizabeth with my email address I still don't believe Alice mar Deacon - no marriage in BMD Thanks again Peter

Thanks Merry Also, thanks to Elizabeth, I have seen the original 1871 census - and I would say that it shows Alice Deacon as a widow. The word definitely ends in a w and doesn't look like the married elsewhere on the page - now looking for a death between conception and census....and there isn't one for any Deacon who remotely fits! Peter

Merry

Merry Report 14 Jul 2006 07:08

Do you think so???? I have looked and looked, but I can't make it say widow!! I think it looks like ''Marr'd'', same as James the head of the following household. There are two widows further down.....Clara Shargood and Lucy Clarke.....the ''W'' seems different to me... In any case.....can't flippin' find him anytime, anyplace, anywhere! On the birth cert for Agnes Beatrice you said the informant was A Deacon. Was that the mother or the father? Merry

Peterkinz

Peterkinz Report 14 Jul 2006 08:18

Yes - I'm sure it ends in a W.. Informant was mother. Will go for Alice's marriage cert in 72 and Agnes Beatrice's marriage cert to see what they say Thanks for all the help - now to find your next challenge (I have found all the easy ones!!) How about James Richard KRAFFT in 1881??? Peter (lol)
