Hi....I have some one in US asking a question ... 'don't know if you have access to the early indentured servant records or not....but I am interested in finding a Jno...and a Thos. Canter who were both taken to Virginia Jno in 1662 and Tho in 1664......There was a William in 1686 and a William also in 1693 to maryland. We are trying to determine if they came from England or France. The transporter was Thomas Chitwood ( Chetwood, etc).' can anyone point me in the right direction regards Cynthia

London appreticeship indenture records are on British Origins for that time frame, but I can't see a match for the names you mention. Do you know what trade they were apprenticed to? Merry

I tried the multi-search page on National Archives/A2a and this was one of the hits... Bickleigh apprenticeships Creator(s): Church of England, Bickleigh Parish, Devon FILE - [no title] - ref. 908/5 - date: 1824-1827 Scope and Content including... Apprentice's name: Thomas Canter, Master's name: Sir Manaseh Masseh Lopes Bart assigned to Thomas Peek, Parents' Residence: Bickleigh, 1824 and Apprentice's name: Ann Canter, Master's name: Richard Stubbins, Parents' Residence: Bickleigh, 1825 and Apprentice's name: Alice Canter, Master's name: Richard Hunt, Parents' Residence: Bickleigh, 1827 [I think it may have some of my husband's GOULDs as well!] Christine

Using teh same search page, but putting in : apprentice and canter I got this hit as well... Bickleigh apprenticeships Creator(s): Church of England, Bickleigh Parish, Devon FILE - [no title] - ref. 908/6 - date: 182[7]-1832 Scope and Content including... Apprentice's name: John Canter, Master's name: James Palmer, Parents' Residence: Bickleigh, 1830 Looks promising as a link to the continuing UK bit of the family? Indentured servants in that period signed up for (I think) seven years to work in America. It was a bit like transportation. This happened to Moll Flanders in the book of that name. There was an article about them in the Soc Gen Journal a couple of years back, though I can't remember where you might find any records. In the instance they described, the ship was stopped at Gravesend and one of the young girls on board thought that they had already arrived in America!
