Dreadful, isn't it?? I have a lot of relatives who were mariners out of Weymouth in Dorset. Only about half the men made it into the burial register :o(( Merry |

My local churchyard (Cloughton in Yorkshire) has umpteen shipwrecked sailors buried there. Many are in the pr's as shipwrecked sailor name unknown from the wreck of the whatever. There is the odd one or two who obviously lived long enough to give a name and where they were from, & this is in the pr's. Jools |

It's the same in all the North Yorks coastal villages, Jools -burial registers have loads of 'unknown man washed up on shore' Jay |

I've seen similar in the PRs of local Kent coastal villages. I've also seen a later addition to the notes, when someone was later identified by distinctive clothing. At least the poor man was given a name then. Gwyn |
