Weddings are conducted in the presence of the registrar,regardless of them being in a church,chapel or registry office. The registrar will then send the details for all marriages in the district for that quarter to the GRO for indexing in the usual way. Registry office weddings could occur way back into the 1800's,i have one from about 1860. Glen |

Registry Office weddings are the one category you can NOT look up at the Record Office. Jay |

Civil marriages (ie in register offices as opposed to a religious establishment) began with civil registration in 1837. The earliest one I have in my tree is in 1852 and the bride gave birth 3 weeks later. I think it was a shotgun wedding. nell |
