I reported this to ancestry quite some time ago suggesting that it made their site look unprofessional and that it was surely a simple matter of correcting an entry in a lookup table. (I am absolutely certain that there is no transcriber typing the word 'widow' or 'widower' in full, rather, they put in a code, probably W as it is on the form and then the software converts that to the word that they want displayed.) Got one of those standard 'not read your email properly' kind of replies. By the way, 1881 was transcribed by the LDS church (ancestry use their transcription) and I bet if you look it up on the LDS site it will not say 'windower'! Kate.

It doesn't Kate - I usually use the discs, or family search, but went in through National Archives and that takes you to Ancestry's version. It is totally incorrect anyway as females are widows and only males can be widowers. Jay
