Glen In Tinsel Knickers

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 12 Jul 2006 11:19

I just sent a pm with a couple of thoughts on this. Other makes were numerous, but most were from the Coventry,Warwick,Birmingham area. Raleigh were always Nottingham based and associated, but there were also Morris (as in MG),Elswick,Falcon,Butler(Claud Butler),Fannings and Browns who made bikes. The pnuematic tyre was produced in the area thanks to Mr Dunlop (though he wasn't from the area),Reynolds made 'tubesets' (the tubes for the frames),and quite a few companies made components,Sturmey Archer being another Midlands company. I used to own a Coventry Eagle bike in the 70s. If you google that, you may find some info. Jack

I googled Cycle manufacture in northamptonshire. maybe , maybe not.... 1888 Northampton became a County Borough. Temperance Hall opened in Newland – headquarters of Temperance Soc. Joseph Grose founded his business, originally as a bicycle shop and manufacturer of cycle components – became pioneer of motor vehicles. 1890 First of annual cycle parades – later became carnival parades. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You could also google Joseph Grose - read aound him and what he did

My g grandfather's occupation was that of Bicycle Polisher on my grandfathers birth cert in 1899 Northampton. On the 1901 census he is stated to be a Cycle Enameller - living in Warwick. Does anyone know if there were Bicycle factories in these areas? I know there was one in Birmingham. I've tried googling history of bicylces etc - no joy. Thanks in advance for any help. I'm off to work now. Angela
