Where do I go to look at certificates

Mother-in-law was born at Northwich Cheshire in 1904 I know the index no etc, Do I go to Northwich, Crewe or Chester to view and would I have to book or anything. I know I can send for them but fancied a day out and having a look.

I'm afraid there is nowhere that you can go to look at them - they have to be ordered. It may be possible to go to the place where th event was registered and they may do you a copy whilst you wait (but will charge you), but I would ring them up first to see if they 'do' family history. Sorry!

As far as I am aware only the staff can view the entries in the book and they produce a copy for you. Some places take your order and send you the cert later, some give you a time to come back and some produce it there and then depends on the individual policy of the office you go to.

If you go to a Record Office, local to the area where a church wedding took place, the parish records entry after 1837 will be the same as a marriage certificate from GRO. You would need to know which church records to view though or it could be a long trawl, especially in a large town or city. Gwyn
