Your grandmothers death was in 1941.......Ive pm'd the details....maybe she was in convalescence somewhere....for those 4 years ,but dint pull through,or had what they now call post menapausal depression.........they wouldnt have been as understanding perhaps in those days,it was wartime after all-she isnt classed a s a civilian casualty either so that angle is ruled out.

So it looks like the family worked on the canals, and in the North West area. With the references to Liverpool and Cheshire you will find they could have used several canals in the area,as well as travelling south to Stoke and maybe Birmingham. It is possible to find which canal carrying company the boat belonged to,but needs a bit of research. The bouts were registered individually, both by name and a registration numbewr, and many of the records for the companies and the boats still survive. A lot of canal transport in the area would have worked 'the salt'.A lot of the salt and lime used was transported from Middlewich. Some old working boats still survive and there is a register of historic working boats that are still owned today. If memory serves the website can be found by googling 'hnboc' Glen

Some things to remember......... 1) not everyone was on the census.....war,travel,and sheer unwillingness prevents us from having everyone pinned down 2) never assume anything in genealogy-family stories are often embellished, and sometimes simply not true...dont take them as gospel. Ada's surname - Kay - was that her married surname?

i have looked through the 1901 census and found what i belive to be my grandmother aged 2. the other people listed as living in the household are mother-head-annie kay-married a brother isdaac aged 11 and sister sarah aged 14-salt packer. there is no mention of a father living there. how would i go about tracing further? i am awaiting my grandfathers marriage cert to estabilish some more facts. also my grandmother ada kay was supposed to have died in 1937 giving birth to my mother, but there is no record of a death cert anywhere? grandad also went to war but he wouldnt have been sent if he was sole parent of my mum? quite intriguing, but im very new to this and would appreciate any tips. thanx
