Heather and Gwynne Well done! I was prompted to look for them after seeing a programme about the Victorians on the History Channel. It compared the lives of Queen Victoria, Caroline Norton and George Eliot (Mary Ann or Marian Evans). Queen Vic started off as ultra respectable and the embodiment of family virtues with Albert and their umpteen children. Caroline Norton, trapped in a marriage to a cruel man, was notorious for being considered a 'fallen woman' and George Eliot, by choosing to live openly with a man married to someone else, was unacceptable in polite society. But after Albert died, Victoria was censured for her relationship with her servant John Brown. Conversely, after the death of Caroline's husband and George Lewes, both Caroline and Mary Ann achieved respectability by marrying other men, though they both died shortly after their weddings. nell |
