Mark, did you notice M. Whitmore age 20 F.S. at the top of next page, born in the same county (which Harriet incidentally wasn't, according to the census)? Could just be a coincidence, but also might be significant. |

Mark - did you know that dressmaker did not always refer to ladies who made dresses !!! |

Merry | Report | 10 Jul 2006 22:21 |
Well, I do hope they were RESPECTABLE!!!! lol We have a 45 year-old dressmaker A 40 year-old dressmaker A 15 year-old apprentice dressmaker and a 25 year-old clergyman (in that order!!) So......either these were two ladies of the night plus their ahem.....trainee.....plus a gentleman - either a client (lol) or trying to reform them!! Otherwise, they could just be three dressmakers plus a lodger!! They might, or might not be related to each other....... Merry |

How did you read that!? I was really stumped as to the occupation - thought she may have been some kind of servant as there was a clergyman there. Thanks Mark |

I'm interested in Harriett Whitmore at the bottom of the image, but she is living in a strange household! See below: |
