Good evening evryone. I have Tom Jepson Gritton (b1813 in Liverpool) although I can't find any birth evidence there, marries Mary Euphemia Aiken in 1853 in Bethnal Green. His father is Joseph Thomas Gritton 'Gentleman' and Mary's father is William Aiken a Master Mariner. I am unable to find Joseph Thomas at all. I first find Tom Jepson on the 1861 census with Mary. His occupation is Merchant Seaman. I assume he is at sea before this which is why I can't find him anywhere. Can you please tell me if I might track him down at Kew, I understand they hold Merchant Marine records. I am really desperate to find this part of my family - but am a bit lost on the way I should proceed. Many thanks, Jeanne

Hi There Just did a quick look on National Archives (first put in 'seaman', then his name when the next search box appears) and this came up: Online Document PROB 11/1657 Will of William Aiken , Master Mariner, now Master of the Ship Fleetwood of London of No 6 Arbour Terrace Commercial Road , Middlesex Date: 1822. Best bet is to visit the National Archives website and try a search. If you find any documents with 'ADM' at the start oif the reference they are the naval/marine/coastguard records. Glen

I am absolutely Gob Smacked....... That is definately my William Aiken - his wife Helen was a Chandler, then Annuitant living at the Maritime Cottages in Stepney after his death. Elly - please forgive a complete jerk, but how can I get hold of this information you found ? Thank you Mr Tinsel Knickers - It'll be money well spent if I can get hold of it....unlike the bundle I've wasted so far... Thank you so very, very much !!!
