Would anyone know which workhouse/poorhouse/asylum would be used for St. James parish, Dudley? Anne

Yes thank you, I have that site. I was hoping to find out where it was so that I could find it on the 1851 census. I have a family that is not around in 1851 then appears again in 1861 with a stepfather. I think I have found the 2nd marriage in 1856 and the year of death for #1 husband in 1855 - - last child born in 1854. So I'm left with the workhouse but I can't find it on the census. Anne

hi there was a big workhouse in Wordsley which is 3 miles out of Dudley. Not sure if that was the only one in the area but its the only one i know of and parts of it still exist today as it was part of Wordsley Hospital until recently. Jayne

If the family were in the workhouse they should still appear in the census index just the same. Workhouses and other institutions were often the last places in an enumeration area, often had their own enumeration district all to themselves.
