As some of you kind souls will recall, I was trying to sort out various Elizabeth Elliotts at the weekend. |

The one listed in the 1861 census: Alfred Elliott abt 1858 Coventry, Warwickshire, England Son Coventry St John Warwickshire Ann Elliott abt 1853 Coventry, Warwickshire, England Daughter Coventry St John Warwickshire >>>>Elizabeth Elliott abt 1825 Farringdon, Hertfordshire, England Wife Coventry St John Warwickshire Mary Jane Elliott abt 1861 Coventry, Warwickshire, England Daughter Coventry St John Warwickshire is listed as being from Farringdon, Hertfordshire, but I can't find a Farringdon in Herts. Has anybody any ideas what it may have been Thansk Mark |

I thought Farringdon was in Hampshire? |

That's the problem! It is quite clear on the census image and definately says Farringdon, Herts Mark |

Theres a Farringdon station in London, and theres a Faringdon in Oxford somewhere. Can you see her in later census results? |

Probably a mistranscription then I would say. Annoying, but there are many of them. If the transcriber had done the others as all Herts he/she may have assumed that she was from there too. |

No, this is the problem - as far as I can make out she must have died shortly after 1861 because by 1871 there is another Mrs Elizabeth Elliott who now has a place of birth in Prescot, Lancs and has in tow two children with the surname Brown. There is a thread lower down where all this bit is listed - the header is 'Very Confused - advice needed.... please' Dover Sue - this entry is sandwiched between two for Coventry, Warwickshire, so although I can't discount that it might be Hants it certainly doesn't look like it. Just a thought - was Hants the abbreviation back in 1861 for Hampshire? The image reference is: Source information: RG9/2205 Registration district: Coventry Sub-registration district: St John ED, institution, or vessel: 33 Folio: 6 Page: 8 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 42 GSU Number: 542935 |

There's one in Dorset as well..... A lot seems to depend on whether it's Far(r)ingd/ton!!! Anyway.....whchever one it is, it will probably be spelled any/all of those ways! Merry |

Possibly Flaunden (soundex?).Part of Hemel Hempstead. There are a few Flaunden Rd/Court/Close/Ave entries in the Herts county street maps, but nothing else springs to mind. Unless the transcription was wrong and Herts was mistaken for Hampshire. Now don't assume this to be anything more than an observation but Hemel Hempstead and Coventry are linked by canal. Glen |

Glen, the canal idea is a good one because I already have a lot of connections with the canals, and it could help explain why this William chap had wives from so far afield when the rest of my ancestors were a very great help by staying put in Foleshill for centuries! Mark |
