Just a word of warning - there are many websites offering coats of arms and family history based on surname alone. They're mostly a load of rubbish, so I hope you find the genuine article.

There are several commercial sites which will claim to have found your coat of arms, but beware, arms were granted to individuals and the right to use them limited to them and their direct descendants not to whole families or everyone with the same name so don't let them try to sell you something which has no real connection with your family.

Hi guys Ive seen the ones you buy, but i really dont want or need to be doing that. Was hoping there might be somewhere i could just download them or copy and paste from a website, i guess it probably cant happen that way. would have looked lovely too!! oh well, such is commercialisation!

Well yes it might look lovely, but just like the ancestors in the tree if it didn't really belong it would rather spoil the tree wouldn't it? How about illustrating it with drawings of things which are personal to your family - tools of the trade, ships if you have mariners etc, or using the coat of arms of a county or borough your family lived in?

Firstly, you need to establish whether a coat of arms was ever granted for the surname/s you have in your tree. The College of Arms is the place to start...........try googling. Reg

Thanks all. a coat of arms for the county is a good idea, i might try that. I will also google the college and see what they come up with Many thanks again
