I can also recommend Family Historian 3. Very versatile. Great handling of graphics, put in a group photograph and assign each face to a name. Uses GEDCOM as its native format, so no conversions required. Will show an 'All Persons' family tree. Can create CD's or a website. Many other great features. It was used for making the WDYTYA TV programmes and It's British. Derek.

Hi Clare Take note of the two ladies that mention the free paf from family search I use it and as you have only 49 people in your tree start doing it now. Good luck Sue

I use Brothers Keeper. I think it's better than FTM except for being pretty rubbish at printing boxed trees. But I have never wanted to print one of those, so it doesn't bother me!! Merry

I hesitate to recommend it, because I don't have any experience of other programs to compare, but I have RootsMagic 3, and think it is very good. The basic version, without any extra CDs, is on offer around £20, but if you do buy it I would advise also buying the book by the program's author 'Getting the most out of RootsMagic', which I think was about £15. One thing it can do, and I don't know if other progs will do the same, is let you make a CD of your tree including a read only version of the program, which you can send to relatives, and they can do pretty well anything except alter the tree. I would be interested to hear the views of any more experienced people.

Buy a few Family History magazines, they nearly all come with free CDs that have Demo versions of different software, then you can try several and decide which suits you best. August Family Tree Magazine has demo versions of Roots Magic 2. Family Historian 3, Legacy 6, Gen Box 3.6 and Brother's Keeper 6.2. Jennifer

I'd recommend getting PAF from www.familysearch.org first. a) its free b) you can play about with it and decide which features you want in a software programme c) you can export anything on PAF to any software you buy using GEDCOM. nell
