I think that Merry is correct. A double SS was very often written with a long flowing script type S followed by the normal S we are familiar with. The two together does look like fs. |

My gg-grandfather was a gas lamp fitter......but on several records they spelled gas with two S's.......so it couldn't be gasman, could it? Merry |

gosh, dont know. The father of my GGG Grandfather is listed as one on the sons marriage cert. Bet he wasnt very popular if he was! |

I have heard of a Gaffman who is a Bailiff could it be that? Or could it be this... Garthman - 1) Fisherman using fish traps 2) Yardman or herdsman 3) Maintained a 'garth' or dam on the river for catching fish Georgina. |

I have an employment description on a marriage cert as a Gafsman. Any idea what one is?? On other stuff I think he is just a labourer. One and the same perhaps? Thanks Ann |
