Merchant Navy During World War Two when a ship was sunk due to enemy action taking the crew down with it, where are the deaths registered.? Bye Robin

You can check to see if they are on the CWGC http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14 Not sure but i think the death should be on the oversea section on 1837 online. just had a look and their is a marine death 1903 to 1965 in the oversea section Roy

Hi Porkie Pie The names of the crew members that died that day are recorded at CWGC which is a touching tribute for those who gave their lives and whose only resting place is at the bottom of the sea. Since they are literally buried at sea ? where do their deaths get registered. Bye Robin

For wartime deaths, a surname search of the Times online archive (see the relevant thread to get a Bedfordhire Libraries ID) could locate the person you're looking for. Helps if the surname is unusual. Just found 2 of my remote cousins who I know died in WW 2.

Are you aware of the memorial at Tower Hill that lists all the members of the Merchant Navy who died in the World Wars?

Hi All, Once again many thanks for all your replies. I have previosly found the person who died at CWGC website which gives a fitting tribute to him. It's just that I now know when he died, where he died, on what ship he was on but not where his death was registered. Looking in the 1940/41 ancestry BMD does not show it registered there. I'll need to get some credits to checkout 1837.com Thanks to all Robin
