Don't know if anyone is interested but have found amongst my dad's junk ( I'm having a clear out for him he just doesn't know yet) an epns tankard, its very dirty and inscribed Presented to WO Whapshott from officers of 17(F) Squadron on the other side a badge and around it it says fighter squadron Royal Air Force Would be happy to pass on to anyone with proof of connection. Maybe contacting the RAF would be an idea. They might be able to find the relatives, or give it a good home in a museum. Kath. x

Pam, I've just switched on the computer and I nearly had heart faliure when I saw this. I have Whapshott /Wapshott in my tree. To be precise my great great Aunt married into the Whapshott family, Regards Karen.

WO stands for Warrant Officer. He was more than likely in charge of Ground Crew and as such would have earned the appreciation of pilots throughout the squadron - hence the tankard. For your interest the Squadron flew Hurricane fighters and during the Battle of Britain was based at Tangmere Sussex and then Debden Essex.
