Betty, I said the 1881 search was free, not the image. They have to charge for something after all!!! Kate.

Betty, Is it possible that Owen was deceased? I have found an entry in 1861 that looks promising in Bishopwearmouth.

Hi Ego, Yes Mary Ann Duffy from Scotland, they married 26th November 1866, Thomas's father in Owen Collins. I Have the family in all the census from 1871 up to 1901 with all their children, just trying to find Thomas's father, mother and siblings. Betty

Hi Ego, The son married in Durham in 1866, have the certificate, his fathers name was on it, later received info that they were both from Ireland County Monaghan. I Just thought if the son, came to Durham maybe other family members came too ie mother, father and siblings. Betty

Hi Phoenix, Thanks for your information!! I just tried a 1881 census search because someone said that was free but still couldn't view the image. Betty

Hi Betty Anyone can search the indexes for free. They provide limited information, but you can refine that search: to males, heads of household, etc 1901 has to be accessed via GR The only thing you can't do is see household groups or the actual images.

Hi Ego, A few people have tried to find my Owen Collins who I think came over from Ireland with his son Thomas Collins born 1841 in Monaghan Ireland. I know Thomas married in Durham 1866, have the marriage certificate, found father Owen name on it but haven't been able to find him, others have helped too, thought I would try and find him using Ancestry, never used it before, all my rellies are Scottish. Betty, the 1881 search is definitely free because the data was supplied by the LDS church. I think for the other censuses they let you do a free search but when you look at the results many of the data items will not be displayed unless you have a subscription (like birthplace for example). But you can always try and see what comes up! Kate.
