Cheryl, in answer to your first question, get the birth certificate for one of the couple's children and that will give you the mother's maiden name, and then you can start looking for the marriage. If you don't know when they got married you start with the quarter when their first child was born and work backwards from there, and if you have no luck that way start looking forwards from the same place in case they got married after the first child was born! As for free sites, ancestry*co*uk has lots of stuff available free although you have to register, and you may decide to subscribe later (oh, replace * with . in the website address). FreeBMD at http://freebmd.rootsweb*com is another good one. And when you have got further back with your tree, try FamilySearch at www.familysearch.org Happy hunting! Kate.
