Tried it out on one I knew existed - 1881 Census for Hannah Butterworth born 1822 Witton Chedhire. Couldn't find her - trawled through 40 pages of Witton!!! Couldn't locate either her or her son on the census search, either -but I KNOW they are there (stupidly don't have copy, it was before I joined Ancestry). I know I am failing badly at census searches but don't see where I'm going wrong. People just don't appear for me!!!

Ann, when that happens (and this was a lovely easy one cos you were sure of place of birth and residence) just put in the first name of one of the family (choose the most unusual if you can) and the rest of the details without the surname and then search.

Thanks, will do. I have been tackling so many of my difficult branches lately and getting bogged down in the census returns....we really do need 'extra eyes' at times, don't we! Am learning more every day which is great. All thanks to the great gang here who always have time to help.
